Made by God, Broken by Sin, Restored in Christ

← January devotional index

Scripture Reading: Genesis 1:26–27; Psalm 139:13–16; Colossians 1:15; Ephesians 4:24

Memory Verse: “So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.” (Gen. 1:27)

Created in God’s Image

Genesis 1 shows that human beings were not created like the rest of creation. God spoke the world into being, but when He created mankind, the language became personal: “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness.” (Gen. 1:26). Man and woman were created by God, for God, and before God. The image of God was not earned by effort or developed over time. It was given in creation. Our identity is not something we invent or borrow from the world. It is received from the Creator who made us. (Gen. 1:27)

Representing the King

Like the image of a king on currency, God’s image points to royal authority. God placed His image on mankind to represent His rule on the earth. Human beings are not God, but they are called to reflect God and rule under the King. (Gen. 1:28; Ps. 8:4–6)

Psalm 139 shows how personally God forms each person. David says that God knitted him together in his mother’s womb and saw his unformed body. (Ps. 139:13–16) Human worth does not begin with ability, appearance, success, health, or usefulness. It begins with God, who fearfully and wonderfully makes each person. (Ps. 139:14)

Broken by Sin, Restored in Christ

Adam was created to know, love, obey, and represent God. But he disobeyed the Lord, and sin entered the world. The image of God was not erased, because human life remains sacred after the fall. Yet it was deeply distorted. Humanity turned from God’s wisdom, holiness, and righteousness to self-rule and unrighteousness. (Gen. 3:1–7; Gen. 9:6; Rom. 5:12)

This is why we must turn to Jesus Christ. Jesus is “the image of the invisible God.” (Col. 1:15) What Adam failed to reflect, Christ perfectly reveals. In Him, we see God’s wisdom, righteousness, holiness, love, obedience, and life in person. He has become our wisdom, righteousness, holiness, and redemption. (1 Cor. 1:30; Heb. 1:3)

Through His death and resurrection, Jesus restores what sin has broken. The first Adam brought sin and death; the last Adam brings grace and life. (Rom. 5:18–19; 1 Cor. 15:45) In Eden, humanity lost the joy of God’s presence and life with Him. But in Christ, we are forgiven, made new, and united with Him. (Rom. 6:4–5; Gal. 2:20)

Because we are united with Christ, we belong to the Father as His children. The Holy Spirit dwells in us and renews us into the image of Christ. (Rom. 8:15; 2 Cor. 3:18) One day, this renewal will be complete. We will see Jesus as He is, and we will be like Him. Our risen Lord and elder Brother will bring us home to live with Him forever. (Rom. 8:29; 1 John 3:2; John 14:2–3)

Disciple Application

To be a disciple is to receive our identity from God and grow into the likeness of Christ. We make disciples by helping people see Christ, belong to Christ, and be renewed in Christ. Every person carries God-given worth and needs the grace of Jesus Christ.

Prayer

Father, thank You for creating us in Your image. Forgive us for seeking our identity apart from You. Thank You for Jesus Christ, who restores what sin has broken. Renew us by Your Spirit and help us lead others to Christ until we see Him and live with Him forever. Amen.
