The Way Was Guarded
In Eden, God placed the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. These trees stood at the centre of man’s relationship with God. Adam and Eve were created to live in God’s presence, depend on His word, and enjoy His life. But when they listened to the serpent and ate the forbidden fruit, sin entered human life. Shame, fear, hiding, blame, and death came into the world. (Gen. 3:6–7; Rom. 5:12)
God said man must not eat from the tree of life and live forever in his fallen condition. So Adam and Eve were sent out of the garden, and cherubim with a flaming sword guarded the way. (Gen. 3:22–24) The tree was not destroyed, but the way was closed. Sinful man could not enter God’s holy presence on his own terms.
The Way Was Still Guarded
Later, in the tabernacle and temple, God taught Israel the same truth. The Most Holy Place was separated by a curtain with cherubim. Only the high priest could enter, only once a year, and only with blood. (Exod. 26:31–33; Lev. 16:2–3) Sin closed the way, and only God could open it.
Jesus Opened the Way
Jesus Christ came as the Last Adam. Where Adam disobeyed, Jesus obeyed. Where Adam brought death, Jesus brought life. When Jesus died, the temple curtain was torn from top to bottom. God Himself opened the way into His presence. Through Christ’s blood, we now have confidence to enter the Most Holy Place. (Matt. 27:50–51; Heb. 10:19–22)
The Tree Is Restored
In Revelation, the tree of life appears again. It is no longer guarded by a flaming sword. It stands in the city of God beside the river of life. Those who wash their robes have the right to enter the city and eat from the tree of life. (Rev. 22:1–2, 14) Eternal life is not earned by our works. It is received through Jesus Christ, who cleanses us by His blood.
As disciples, we come to Jesus for life and lead others to Him. Proverbs says, “The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life.” (Prov. 11:30) A disciple who has received life in Christ must become life-giving to others.
Prayer: Father, thank You for opening the way to life through Jesus Christ. Help me to live as a holy disciple and lead others to the Saviour. Amen.
