Do Not Bite the Bait

From Satan’s Lie in Eden to Christ’s Victory in the Wilderness

← January devotional index

Scripture Reading: Genesis 3:1–7; Matthew 4:1–11

Memory Verse: Romans 13:14

God’s Word Is Life-Giving

God’s Word is clear and life-giving. In Eden, God gave Adam a command, not to crush his joy, but to guard his life. Adam and Eve were free to enjoy all the trees except one. God’s command was wisdom and love. (Gen. 2:16–17)

Satan’s Bait

But Satan came like a fisherman with bait. He did not begin with open rebellion. He began with a question: “Did God really say?” He made God’s Word sound doubtful, narrow, and unfair. Then he denied God’s warning: “You will not certainly die.” Satan showed the fruit, but hid the hook. (Gen. 3:1–5)

The Hook Behind the Fruit

This is how temptation often works. Sin promises pleasure, freedom, and wisdom, but it brings guilt, shame, and death. Eve saw that the fruit was good for food, pleasing to the eye, and desirable for wisdom. She took it and ate. Adam also ate. Their eyes were opened, but instead of glory, they saw shame. They covered themselves with fig leaves and hid from God. (Gen. 3:6–7)

Adam and Eve could cover their bodies, but they could not cleanse their hearts. Only God could provide the true covering. The gospel calls us to “put on the Lord Jesus Christ.” Our fig leaves cannot save us, but Christ covers our shame, forgives our guilt, and clothes us with new life. (Gen. 3:21; Rom. 13:14)

Jesus Defeated the Tempter

Satan came again with the same old bait, but this time he came to Jesus in the wilderness. Jesus did what Adam failed to do. Three times He answered, “It is written.” He trusted the Father, obeyed the Word, and rejected Satan’s shortcut. (Matt. 4:4, 7, 10)

Jesus is the true and faithful Son. He defeated temptation, carried our sin on the cross, and rose again in victory. Through Him, our shame is covered, our guilt is forgiven, and our fellowship with the Father is restored. (Heb. 4:15; Col. 2:13–15)

Disciple Application

Do not play with Satan’s bait. Know God’s Word, hold it accurately, and obey it humbly. As disciple-makers, help others see Satan’s lies and lead them to Christ, who alone gives victory over sin, shame, and death. (1 Pet. 5:8–9)

Prayer

Lord Jesus, help me to love Your Word, discern Satan’s lies, and refuse the bait of temptation. Teach me to put on Christ daily and help others stand firm in You. Amen.
