The Seed Who Crushes the Serpent

From Eden’s Promise to Christ’s Victory

← January devotional index

📖 Scripture Reading: Genesis 3:15

After Adam and Eve sinned, humanity did not begin searching for a way back to God. God took the initiative. In the middle of judgment, He declared to the serpent, “I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers.” (Gen. 3:15)

The serpent had drawn humanity into rebellion, but God announced that this alliance would not continue forever. The rescue would not come through Adam’s strength, Eve’s effort, or human determination. God Himself would act. Genesis 3:15 is therefore the first gospel promise: one day, the woman’s offspring would be wounded by the serpent, yet He would crush the serpent’s head.

When Eve gave birth to Cain, he was not the promised deliverer. Instead, Cain murdered Abel, showing how deeply sin had entered the human heart. (Gen. 4:1–8) The promised Victor was still to come.

God carried the promise forward through Abraham. He promised that through Abraham’s offspring all nations would be blessed. (Gen. 12:1–3; 22:18) Paul explains that this promised offspring is ultimately Christ. (Gal. 3:16)

The promise continued through David. God promised him a son whose kingdom and throne would endure. (2 Sam. 7:12–16) That is why the New Testament introduces Jesus as “the son of David, the son of Abraham.” (Matt. 1:1) The promises of Eden, Abraham, and David all meet in Jesus Christ.

At the cross, the serpent struck Christ’s heel. Jesus suffered and died, but death could not hold Him. Through His death and resurrection, He defeated the devil’s power and freed those enslaved by the fear of death. (Heb. 2:14–15) What appeared to be defeat became Christ’s triumph. He forgave our sins, disarmed the powers of evil, and rose above every authority. (Col. 2:13–15; Eph. 1:20–22)

Satan still deceives, tempts, and accuses, but his final defeat is certain. God’s people overcome through the blood of the Lamb. (Rev. 12:9–11) Therefore, our confidence is not in our own spiritual strength, but in the crucified, risen, and reigning Christ.

Be a disciple: Submit to God, resist the devil, and stand firm in Christ. (James 4:7)

Make disciples: Help others see the Bible as one unfolding story—from Eden’s promise to Christ’s victory.

🙏 Prayer: Lord, thank You for sending the promised Seed, Jesus Christ. Help me resist deception, stand firm in Your victory, and lead others to the Saviour. Amen.
