THE FIRST HUMAN BORN BECOMES THE FIRST MURDERER

From Abel’s Blood to the Better Blood of Christ

← January devotional index

📖 Scripture Reading: Genesis 4:1–15

Life Outside Eden

Adam and Eve began life outside Eden holding God’s promise that the woman’s offspring would crush the serpent. Yet life beyond the garden was painful. They had lost God’s presence and provision. Eve experienced pain in childbirth, while Adam struggled against the cursed ground.

Still, God did not abandon them. Eve gave birth to Cain and said, “With the help of the LORD I have brought forth a man” (Gen. 4:1). Her words expressed gratitude and perhaps hope that Cain was connected to God’s promised offspring. Abel was born.

Two Brothers, Two Offerings

Cain worked the soil, while Abel kept flocks. Both brought offerings. Cain brought some produce, but Abel brought the firstborn of his flock and their fat portions.

Genesis does not call Abel’s sacrifice a sin offering, because the Levitical system had not yet been given. Hebrews says Abel offered by faith (Heb. 11:4). His blood sacrifice pointed towards the truth that sinners cannot approach the holy God through human achievement.

Cain’s offering was not rejected because it came from the ground; God accepted grain offerings. The deeper problem was Cain’s heart. His anger and jealousy revealed rebellion rather than humble faith.

Sin at the Door

God warned Cain: “Sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you” (Gen. 4:7). But Cain ignored the warning. Jealousy became anger, anger became deception, and deception ended in murder. The first human born became the first murderer.

Sin began in Cain’s heart before it appeared through his hands. Jesus taught that murder grows from anger and hatred within us (Matt. 5:21–22).

When God asked, “Where is your brother Abel?” Cain lied and refused responsibility. Yet Abel’s blood cried out for justice.

The Better Blood

Cain was not the promised offspring. Abel was righteous, but he was murdered. Later, Jesus Christ, the righteous One, was also rejected and killed. Yet His blood speaks a better word than Abel’s blood.

Abel’s blood cried for judgment, but Christ’s blood speaks forgiveness, cleansing, reconciliation, and peace (Heb. 12:24). Jesus entered our exile, bore our judgment, defeated Satan, and opened the way back to God.

Do not treat jealousy, anger, or hatred as harmless. Bring them to God before they control you. Resist sin, seek reconciliation, and point others to Christ, whose blood cleanses sinners and brings wandering people home.

🙏 Prayer: Lord, expose the jealousy and anger within me. Thank You that Jesus’ blood speaks forgiveness and peace. Help me resist sin, love others, and lead people to Christ. Amen.
