“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” — Genesis 1:1
God Created All Things by His Powerful Word
A draughtsman once drew a circle and asked others to find its exact centre. They looked carefully and made their best guesses, but only the one who drew the circle truly knew where it began.
In the same way, human beings look at the world and try to explain its origin. Some deny the Creator. Some offer theories. Others study the stars, the earth, and the natural world with great skill. Yet no human being was present when the heavens and the earth were created. The true beginning belongs to God alone. (Job 38:4–7)
Genesis does not begin with human opinion. It begins with God: “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” God existed before all things, and all things came from Him. He did not struggle to create. He spoke, and creation came into being. His word is powerful, effective, and life-giving. (Gen. 1:1; Ps. 33:6–9)
God created everything with order, purpose, and beauty. Light and darkness, sky and sea, land and vegetation, sun and moon, birds, fish, animals, and mankind all came by His wise command. The world is not random or meaningless. It is the creation of the living God. (Gen. 1:1–31)
It is also important to notice that Satan does not appear in Genesis 1 and 2. The Bible first shows us God’s good creation. Sin and rebellion enter only in Genesis 3. This reminds us that evil is not eternal, and Satan is not equal with God. God alone is Creator, King, and Lord over all. (Gen. 3:1–7)
John’s Gospel takes us from creation to Christ: “In the beginning was the Word.” All things were made through Jesus Christ. He is not part of creation; He is the eternal Word through whom creation came into being. The Creator is also our Redeemer. Through His death and resurrection, Jesus gives new life to sinners and will one day make all things new. (John 1:1–3; Col. 1:15–20; Rev. 21:1–5)
Disciple Application
As disciples of Christ, we begin with God, not human opinion. We worship Him as Creator, trust His word, follow Jesus as Lord, and help others see their origin, purpose, and future in Him.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for creating all things by Your powerful word. Help us to worship You, follow Christ, and live with hope for the new creation. Amen.
