The Perfect Love

The Self-Sufficient and Perfect God Is the God of Perfect Love

← January devotional index

Scripture Reading: Jeremiah 32:17; John 3:16; 2 Corinthians 5:11–21

Memory Verse: “See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God!” — 1 John 3:1

Love Comes from Above

The self-sufficient God lacks nothing, and the perfect God needs nothing. Yet this God, complete in Himself, freely gives Himself in love. His love comes from above, is lavished on us in Christ, and must now be shown through us to others. (1 John 3:1; 1 John 4:7–11)

God did not create the world because He was lonely, empty, or incomplete. Before creation, the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit lived in eternal glory, joy, and love. Love did not begin with us. Love began in God. God is love in His eternal being. (John 17:24; 1 John 4:8)

The Love of the Triune God

The triune God is eternally united in perfect love. The Father loves the Son, and the Son lives in perfect delight before the Father, in the fellowship of the Holy Spirit. This divine love is generous, life-giving, and overflowing. (John 3:35; John 17:24)

God created the universe not out of need, but out of the abundance of His goodness and glory. All things are from the Father, through the Son, and by the power of the Spirit. Creation is the work of divine love, wisdom, and purpose. (Gen. 1:1–2; John 1:1–3; Col. 1:15–17)

The Father’s Love Lavished on Us in Christ

The Father’s love is most clearly revealed in Jesus Christ. God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son. Jesus came not merely to teach or inspire us, but to save us and reconcile sinners to God. (John 3:16; 2 Cor. 5:18–19)

Through His death and resurrection, the Father’s love is lavished on us. We are no longer strangers, enemies, or orphans, but children of God. This is agape love: holy, costly, self-giving, and life-transforming. (John 1:12; Rom. 5:8; Rom. 8:15–17)

Reconciled by Love, Sent in Love

Because Christ’s love compels us, we no longer live for ourselves. We live for Him who died and rose again. God has reconciled us to Himself in Christ and entrusted us with the message of reconciliation. (2 Cor. 5:14–15, 20)

Discipleship Application

As disciples of Christ, we are loved by the Father, saved by the Son, and filled with the Holy Spirit. We do not make disciples by pressure, pride, or control. We make disciples as people who have first been loved by God.

To be a disciple is to receive the Father’s love through Christ. To make disciples is to show His agape love through our words, actions, forgiveness, service, and gospel witness. The love that came from above must now flow through us, so that others may become children of God and members of His family. (John 13:34–35; Matt. 28:18–20)

Prayer

Father, thank You for Your perfect love revealed in Jesus Christ. Help us to live as Your beloved children. Fill us with the Holy Spirit, so that Christ’s love may compel us to love others, proclaim the gospel, and make disciples who belong to Your family. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
