One Man, One Humanity

Created in Adam, Restored in Christ

← January devotional index

Scripture Reading: Genesis 1:26–27; Genesis 2:7, 15–25; Genesis 5:1–3; Ecclesiastes 3:11; Matthew 22:37; Romans 5:12–19; 1 Corinthians 6:19–20; 1 Corinthians 15:45–49; Ephesians 2:14–16; 1 Thessalonians 5:23; Hebrews 2:10–12; Revelation 7:9–10; Revelation 21:1–5

Humanity Began with One Man

Genesis teaches that humanity began with one man. Adam was formed from the dust and given the breath of life. Eve was formed from Adam, not as a lesser person, but as his suitable helper and companion. Together, they show the dignity and fellowship of human life before God. Cain, Abel, and Seth were not created separately from the dust; they came through Adam and Eve. Scripture says Adam had a son “in his own likeness, in his own image.” Therefore, the whole human family descends from Adam. Humanity is one family with one earthly head. (Gen. 2:7, 18–25; Gen. 5:1–3; Acts 17:26)

Unique in God’s Image

Human beings are unique in creation. Trees have life, and animals live by instinct, but only human beings are created in God’s image. We can know God, love Him, obey Him, worship Him, and live before Him. God has also placed eternity in the human heart. This longing cannot be satisfied by the world. It is fulfilled only in God through Jesus Christ. (Gen. 1:26–27; Eccl. 3:11; John 14:6) God created us as whole persons. Jesus said the greatest command is to love the Lord with all our heart, soul, and mind. Paul reminds us that our bodies belong to God because we were bought at a price. God sanctifies the whole person — spirit, soul, and body — as we wait for Christ’s coming. (Matt. 22:37; 1 Cor. 6:19–20; 1 Thess. 5:23)

Adam’s Fall and Our Separation

Adam was created to live in God’s presence, obey God’s word, and care for the world. But Adam sinned and failed to remain in God’s presence. Through one man, sin and death entered the world. From Adam, we receive human life, but also a fallen nature. Sin separated us from God. (Gen. 2:15–17; Gen. 3:8–24; Rom. 5:12–14)

Christ, the Last Adam

Jesus Christ is the last Adam and the true image of God. He is fully God and truly man. Where Adam disobeyed, Jesus obeyed. Where Adam brought sin and death, Jesus brings forgiveness, righteousness, and life. Through His death and resurrection, Christ gives us a new heart, makes us a new creation, gives us a new purpose, and makes us God’s temple where His Spirit dwells. One day, He will transform our mortal bodies in the twinkling of an eye. (Col. 1:15; Rom. 5:18–19; 1 Cor. 6:19–20; 1 Cor. 15:45–53; 2 Cor. 5:17)

Brought into God’s Family

Because of Jesus, our elder Brother, we know the Father and become children of God. The Holy Spirit teaches us to cry, “Abba, Father.” By grace, through the death of our Lord Jesus Christ, we are forgiven, brought near, and included in God’s family. Christ also creates one new humanity. In Him, the dividing wall is broken, and divided people are brought near to God and to one another. God’s final picture is a redeemed multitude from every nation, tribe, people, and language worshipping before His throne. (Rom. 8:15–17; Eph. 2:14–16; Heb. 2:10–12; Rev. 7:9–10)

Disciple Application

As disciples, we see every person with God-given dignity and every person’s deepest need: forgiveness and new life in Jesus Christ. To be a disciple is to belong to Christ, the last Adam, and live as a child in God’s family. To make disciples is to proclaim Christ, call people to repent and believe, and bring others into the one new humanity He has created by grace. (Matt. 28:18–20; 2 Cor. 5:17–20)

Memory Verse:

“And just as we have borne the image of the earthly man, so shall we bear the image of the heavenly man.” (1 Corinthians 15:49)

Prayer:

Lord God, thank You for creating us in Your image and placing eternity in our hearts. Thank You for Jesus Christ, the last Adam, who forgives our sins, gives us new life, and brings us into Your family. Help us to honour You with our whole life and proclaim Christ to others. Amen
