Created with Purpose
God did not create man as a dummy, decoration, or silent figure in the garden. He created man in His image and gave him a clear purpose. God blessed human beings and called them to be fruitful, multiply, fill the earth, subdue it, and rule over the living creatures. This was not a burden, but a blessing and calling under God’s loving authority. (Gen. 1:28)
Given Responsibility
Before God gave man responsibility, He gave him everything he needed. God created the world, formed the garden, provided food, gave work, and brought the animals to Adam. Adam was not passive. He listened, worked, named the animals, and exercised wisdom and authority under God. Man was created to walk with God, work under God, and carry out God’s purpose on the earth. (Gen. 2:15–20)
Called to Be Fruitful
The first word in God’s blessing was “be fruitful.” Fruitfulness includes children, but it is more than that. It speaks of life, growth, worship, character, blessing, and multiplication. In Scripture, fruit reveals the condition of the tree. A good tree bears good fruit, and a bad tree bears bad fruit. The fruit shows the nature of the life within. (Matt. 7:16–20; Matt. 12:33). Adam could be fruitful only by living in fellowship with God. Fruit does not grow by itself. A branch must remain connected to the tree. In the same way, human beings cannot fulfil God’s purpose apart from God. We were created for joyful dependence, not proud independence.
Wounded by Sin
But Adam failed in his calling. Instead of remaining under God’s rule, he listened to another voice. Sin entered, fellowship was broken, death spread, and human fruitfulness was spoiled by rebellion. People multiplied, but the earth was not filled with faithful worshippers. Families, nations, and creation itself came under the pain of sin. God’s purpose was not destroyed, but human beings could not fulfil it by their own strength. (Rom. 5:12–19)
Restored in Jesus Christ
This is why we need Jesus Christ. God sent His Son to restore what Adam lost. Jesus is the faithful Man, the true Son, and the last Adam. Where Adam disobeyed, Jesus obeyed. Where Adam brought death, Jesus brings life. Through His death and resurrection, Jesus redeems us, joins us to Himself, and brings us back into fellowship with the Father. He is the firstfruits of the new creation and the source of eternal life. (1 Cor. 15:20–22, 45–49; 1 John 1:1–4)
Joined to the True Vine
Jesus said, “I am the true vine.” Adam was called to be fruitful, but Jesus is the true source of fruitfulness. We do not bear lasting fruit by our own effort, religion, or wisdom. We bear fruit by remaining in Christ. The Father lovingly prunes His people so that they may bear more fruit. (John 15:1–5)
Now our purpose is clear. We remain in Christ, enjoy fellowship with God, bear fruit for Him, and bring others under the Lordship of Christ. Fruitfulness includes multiplication. Disciples make disciples. Through the gospel, people from every nation, tribe, people, and language are joined to Christ and worship God forever. (Matt. 28:18–20; Rev. 7:9–10)
Memory Verse: “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit.” — John 15:5
