← January devotional index

Scripture Reading: Genesis 2:1–3; Exodus 20:8–11; Deuteronomy 5:12–15; Psalm 95:7–11; Matthew 11:28–30; John 19:30; Hebrews 3:12–19; Hebrews 4:1–11; Revelation 21:1–5

Creation Finished in Rest

God created the heavens and the earth in six days. After each part of creation, God saw that it was good. At the end of the sixth day, after creating man and woman in His image, God saw all that He had made, and it was very good. Creation came from the hand of the perfect Creator. It did not need repair or improvement. God was fully satisfied with His completed work. (Gen. 1:31)

On the seventh day, God rested from all His work. This does not mean God became tired. His rest means His creation work was complete, finished, and perfectly good. God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, setting it apart for rest, worship, and delight in His completed work. (Gen. 2:2–3; Isa. 40:28)

Created to Enter God’s Rest

Adam and Eve were created on the sixth day, and their first full day was the seventh day. They began life not by working for God’s favour, but by entering the rest of God’s finished creation. Their life began from rest, not self-effort. They were called to live in His presence, enjoy His fellowship, rule under His authority, and serve His purpose. (Gen. 1:26–28; Gen. 2:15)

But Adam and Eve did not continue in that rest. The serpent deceived them, and Adam and Eve disobeyed God’s word. Through sin, shame, fear, death, and separation entered human life. They lost the joy of resting in God’s presence. (Gen. 3:1–10)

Rest Restored through Christ

What a wonderful God we have. In creation, God finished His work and invited man to enter His rest. At the cross, Jesus finished the work of salvation and invited sinners to enter God’s rest again. Creation rest comes from God’s finished work; salvation rest comes from Christ’s finished work. (Gen. 2:2–3; John 19:30; Heb. 4:3, 10). Jesus invites the weary and burdened to come to Him and receive rest. This rest is not found in our own righteousness, religious effort, or good works. We enter God’s rest by believing in Jesus Christ and resting upon His finished work. He died for our sins, rose again, and opened the way back to the Father. (Matt. 11:28–30; John 14:6)

Hebrews says, “Now we who have believed enter that rest.” We rest from trying to save ourselves, because Christ has completed the work of salvation for us. We are forgiven, accepted, reconciled to God, and brought back into fellowship with Him. (Rom. 5:1; Heb. 4:3, 10)

As disciples of Jesus, we already have rest in Christ, but we still look forward to final rest in the new heaven and new earth. So we keep trusting Christ, listening to His word, obeying Him, and walking with Him until the end. One day, there will be no more sin, death, tears, curse, or separation. We will dwell with God forever. (Heb. 4:11; Rev. 21:1–5; Rev. 22:3–5)

Disciple Application

As a disciple, I must stop trying to earn God’s acceptance by my own strength. I must come to Jesus, trust His finished work, and rest in His grace. As a disciple-maker, I must invite weary people to Jesus Christ, not to religion, pressure, guilt, or self-effort. Christ has finished the work of salvation. Whoever believes in Him enters God’s rest now and will enjoy His eternal rest forever. (Matt. 11:28; John 19:30)

Memory Verse

“Now we who have believed enter that rest.” Hebrews 4:3

Prayer

Lord Jesus, thank You for completing the work of salvation on the cross. Teach me to rest in Your finished work, obey Your word, and walk faithfully with You. Help me to invite others into Your true rest. Amen.
