Are We Really on the Right Side of History?

Genesis 6 and the Problem of the Human Heart

← January devotional index

Scripture Reading: Genesis 6:1–7; Matthew 15:19

Supporting Scriptures: Genesis 3:6; Jeremiah 17:9; Romans 1:24–28; Ezekiel 36:26–27; John 14:6; Romans 8:14–15

The Same Human Heart

“I am on the right side of history” is a common expression today. Modern society has certainly advanced in technology, medicine, education, and communication. But greater knowledge does not necessarily produce a better human heart.

Genesis 6 describes an ancient world, yet its deepest problem sounds remarkably modern: people rejected God’s boundaries and followed their own desires. Culture changes, but the human heart remains the same. (Gen. 6:1–5)

When Desire Becomes the Authority

Genesis says that the sons of God “saw that the daughters of man were attractive” and “took as their wives any they chose.” (Gen. 6:2) Christians differ over who the “sons of God” were, but the pattern is clear: they saw, desired, chose, and took.

The same pattern appeared in Eden. Eve saw that the forbidden fruit was desirable, and she took it. (Gen. 3:6) Rebellion begins when our desires become more authoritative than God’s Word.

Our culture often tells us to look within, discover our deepest desires, and make them our identity. But Scripture asks a different question: Is what I desire pleasing to God?

The Problem Is Within Us

“The LORD saw that the wickedness of man was great…and that every intention of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.” (Gen. 6:5)

The problem was not lack of education or civilisation. The problem was the human heart.

Jesus gives the same diagnosis: “Out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, slander.” (Matt. 15:19) Pride, greed, hatred, dishonesty, jealousy, and sexual sin all come from the same fallen heart.

Genesis 6 therefore calls us not merely to criticise society, but to examine ourselves.

God’s Truth, Not “My Truth”

If the heart is deceitful, truth cannot safely be created from within us. Jesus did not say, “Discover your truth.” He declared, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life.” (John 14:6)

Our deepest need is not simply better behaviour. We need a new heart. God promises, “I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you.” (Ezek. 36:26) Through Christ, God gives His Spirit so that we learn to live under His truth rather than being ruled by every desire.

Disciple Application

Do not merely ask, “Am I on the right side of history?”

Ask instead, “Am I on God’s side, living under His truth and lordship?”

The world may say, “Live your truth.” The disciple says, “Jesus is the Truth, and I will follow Him.”

Prayer:

Father, search my heart and reveal where my desires are resisting Your truth. Forgive me through Jesus Christ. Give me a new heart and lead me by Your Spirit. Help me to live faithfully under the lordship of Jesus with truth, humility, and love. Amen.

Memory Verse

“For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, slander.” Matthew 15:19
