Grace That Preserves a Family and Points to Christ

← January devotional index

Scripture Reading: Genesis 6:8–22

Supporting Scriptures: Genesis 3:15; 6:5–7; Psalm 103:8–10; Romans 3:23; 5:8; Ephesians 2:8–10; Hebrews 11:7; Isaiah 53:5–6; 1 Peter 3:18

Grace in a Broken World

Genesis 6 opens with a devastating assessment: human wickedness had become great, and the thoughts of the human heart were continually inclined towards evil. God announced judgement upon the world. Then comes a remarkable turn: Noah found favour in the eyes of the Lord. (Gen. 6:5–8). Why Noah? Scripture does not present him as a sinless exception to humanity. He belonged to Adam's fallen family, like us all. Yet he was described as righteous and blameless in his generation because he walked faithfully with God. His life was marked by trust, not perfection. (Gen. 6:9; Rom. 3:23; Heb. 11:7)

Grace and God's Faithfulness

God's favour did not mean that He had changed His mind or overlooked evil. The Lord remained holy in judgement and gracious in salvation. His promise concerning the woman's offspring would not be abandoned. Through Noah's preserved family, human history continued towards the coming Saviour. (Gen. 3:15; 6:18). Grace is not a reward paid to the worthy; it is God's undeserved kindness. Mercy means that God does not treat His people as their sins deserve. Both shine in Noah's story. God provided the way of rescue, and Noah responded in faith. (Ps. 103:8–10; Eph. 2:8–10)

God's choice does not invite pride, as though Noah deserved a special status. It invites wonder that anyone is saved at all. The story teaches us to hold together God's justice, His patient kindness and His covenant faithfulness. (Gen. 6:8–9)

Grace Reaches a Household

The ark was not for Noah alone. God called his wife, his three sons and their wives into it, while preserving living creatures for the world beyond the flood. His provision guarded a future for creation, even as His judgement exposed the seriousness of sin. (Gen. 6:18–21). Noah obeyed everything God commanded. Grace did not make obedience unnecessary; it moved him to faithful action. (Gen. 6:22; Heb. 11:7)

From Noah to Jesus Christ

Noah was sheltered from judgement in an ark God instructed him to build. Jesus is the greater Saviour: He Himself bore judgement for sinners and brings us safely to God. We are rescued, not by our moral record, but through His death and resurrection. (Isa. 53:5–6; Rom. 5:8; 1 Pet. 3:18)

Disciple Application

Do not ask first, "Am I better than others?" Ask, "Am I trusting God's grace?" Walk with God amid a corrupt generation; obey His Word even when the world takes another path. Teach your household the gospel, pray for them and let gratitude shape your daily choices. (Eph. 2:8–10)

Prayer

Gracious Father, thank You for mercy we could never earn. Help us walk faithfully with You, honour Your Word and share Christ's saving grace with our families and neighbours. Amen.
