The Perfect God

The Self-Sufficient Creator Is the Perfect Triune God

← January devotional index

Scripture Reading: Genesis 1:1–2, 26-28; Psalm 90:1–2; Colossians 1:15–23

God is self-existent and self-sufficient. Before the mountains were born and before the world was formed, God existed from everlasting to everlasting. He depends on nothing outside Himself. He is complete in Himself (Ps. 90:1–2; Acts 17:24–25).

This self-sufficient God is also perfect. He is not becoming wiser, holier, stronger, or more glorious. He is eternally holy, good, loving, and complete. God did not create because He lacked something. He created out of His fullness, wisdom, goodness, and glory (Gen. 1:1; Isa. 6:3; Jas. 1:17).

The perfect God works perfectly. In creation, He brought something out of nothing, light out of darkness, order out of emptiness, and life where there was no life (Gen. 1:1–3; Heb. 11:3). Then the Triune God said, “Let us make mankind in our image.” Humanity was created to reflect God’s knowledge, holiness, righteousness, love, and rule under His lordship (Gen. 1:26–28; Eph. 4:24; Col. 3:10).

But sin distorted God’s image. At Babel, people united in pride to make a name for themselves instead of living for God’s glory (Gen. 11:4–9). Yet God’s perfect plan did not fail. The holy God later called Isaiah, saying, “Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?” God was preparing His mission to the nations (Isa. 6:3, 8).

In the fullness of time, the Triune God revealed Himself clearly in Jesus Christ. The Father sent the Son, and the Holy Spirit came upon Mary so that Jesus was born as the promised Saviour (Luke 1:35). At Jesus’ baptism, the Son stood in the water, the Spirit descended like a dove, and the Father declared His love for His Son (Matt. 3:16–17).

Jesus is not part of creation. He is the eternal Son through whom all things were created. “He is before all things, and in him all things hold together” (Col. 1:17). The Creator entered His creation, died for our sins, rose again, and reconciled us to God through His blood (Col. 1:19–22).

Now the Triune God works in our salvation. The Father adopts us, the Son becomes our elder Brother, and the Holy Spirit helps us cry, “Abba, Father” (Rom. 8:14–17). He renews us, leads us, and transforms us into the image of Jesus Christ (2 Cor. 3:18).

Discipleship Application:

As disciples, we worship the perfect Triune God who created us, redeemed us, and transforms us. We make disciples by proclaiming not self-improvement, but new creation in Christ.

Memory Verse:

“He is before all things, and in him all things hold together.”

Colossians 1:17

Prayer:

Perfect Triune God, restore Your image in us and help us live as faithful disciples of Jesus Christ. Amen.
